What Does Tuition Include? And What Do We Need To Buy For The Student? Explained.

Dear parents and students,

Your tuition provides instruction from Gabriel and guest teachers. Tuition also covers most shared materials and things we all share. This includes most art materials and supplies we need to operate the studio. Your tuition pays for pencils, papers, oil, oil paint, erasers, pencil sharpeners, paper towels, soap, cleaning supplies, subject matter, perishable food and flowers, tape, drapery cloth, clips, clamps, rubber ducks, light bulbs, hardware, toilet paper, etc...

Thing you will need to buy are Paint Brushes and Painting Surfaces. This is because paint brushes are personal things and I want every student to know how to acquire them and care for them. This includes knowing what paint brushes are best for their own style and how to wash them carefully and keep them in good condition.

Painting Surfaces come in a variety of options. You will eventually learn what your favorite surfaces are. This includes, wooden panel primed with acrylic or oil primer, linen panels, stretched linen, gesso board, aluminum panels, etc. I usually have a number of cheaper panels available. However, I prefer a student develop the skill of knowing what to acquire to become a well equipped student.

Local Small Business - Art Supply Shopping

I recommend a visit to Lenz Art in Santa Cruz, CA for local shopping

For art supplies on the peninsula I recommend California Art Supply in San Mateo.

Basic Brushes Explained

A beginner Brush set should include about a dozen brushes in these types,

Flats, these have flat shaped brush tips with long synthetic hairs and long handles

Filberts, these have almond shaped tips with long synthetic hairs and long handles

Rounds, these are round pointy brushes with long synthetic hairs and long handles

As you collect more brushes you will see many more brush sizes and shapes that are useful. These are best understood by practice and experience with the teacher and asking questions in person.
