Accepting new students year round. Our current semester ends May 29, 2025.
Our new semester begins August 19, 2025 and ends December 18, 2025.
My name is Gabriel Coke and I am the instructor at Art Students' Atelier. I specialize in teaching talented children. I teach Drawing and Oil Painting with skills I practiced in my many years in Ateliers in Europe and The United States. Please feel welcome to contact me to discuss your child's needs, goals and abilities. Your child's success means a great deal to me. I offer year-round instruction, experience and letters of recommendation as your child approaches college admissions.
Read about Gabriel's experience written by local artist Marie Cameron
Gabriel Coke is not only an accomplished realist artist who studies and captures formal and whimsical subjects in mediums of oil paint, charcoal and chalk, but has become the very kind of supportive art teacher that he’d always wished he'd had!
Eschewing the focus on Modern Art that he was exposed to in Humboldt State University, Coke turned instead to the atelier community that was resurfacing around the world, studying with the Gage Academy in Seattle, the studio of Anthony Ryder in Santa Fe, the École Albert Defoise in the Loire Valley, with Carlos Madrid, a Peruvian student of Odd Nerdum’s, based in New York City and The Grand Central Atelier in New York City. All the while Coke was carefully observing the structure of the ateliers so I could establish his own one day.
Gabriel brought this extensive knowledge to New Museum Los Gatos where he was the Atelier Program Director for for five years, culminating with the exhibition of “On The Shoulders of Giants” which featured all 12 professional visiting artists of the atelier alongside 22 young local artists.
Gabriel Coke went on to found Art Student’s Atelier in Saratoga in 2021 where he teaches drawing and oil painting to students of all abilities, helping people connect with their creative selves in a nurturing studio environment. Many of his students have gone on to win awards and enter leading art schools and colleges, bringing him a vicarious sense of accomplishment by being part of their journey.
Currently, “Unlimited Imagination - Gabriel Coke & The Art Student’s Atelier”, is on exhibit at the Triton Museum of Art through August 11. This show features Coke’s work spanning the last 15 years, together with the work of 34 of his current and alumni students through a range of realistic and surrealistic drawings and oil paintings.
When asked what advice he would give to budding artists, Gabriele Coke responded, “Making art comes from your soul and when you lay your heart out in a drawing or a painting you leave a trace of your consciousness. Don't be afraid to practice and get better. Some of the simplest things about drawing and painting may not appear to you naturally. Having a place to go to find answers and get advice can make a world of difference. Don't be afraid to travel far away to get education. It's good to go explore the world and get out of your comfort zone.”
Parent Testimonials
My daughter has been coming to Gabriel’s studio since middle school, from 6th to 11th grade. She has learned so much technique and skills, from charcoal to oil painting. Gabriel is a very talented artist and a great teacher, very patient with students with positive and encouraging teaching skill. My daughter not only improved her art, but began to truly enjoy the art. She decided to pursue art as her career. She now attends The ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. We greatly appreciate Gabriel’s teaching over the years.

Summer Art Studio is ideal for the creation of an art portfolio as students prepare for college applications. All abilities are welcome whether for fun or for reaching academic goals.
The weeks of June 16 and 23 will include two days per week of life drawing. This will be a drawing boot camp with a focus on the fundamentals of drawing skills.
In July young students will practice drawing and oil painting each studio work-week. These are opportunities to concentrate in the studio with quality guidance to gain skills, experience and finished work. Students 12 and up are welcome.

Gabriel was my daughter’s art teacher for over six years. We discovered Gabriel when we met an artist painting at Hakone Gardens years ago. My daughter, who was 12 at the time and a budding artist, was in awe of the artist’s work. She spoke with us and told us that she had been a student of Gabriel’s and recommended him as an outstanding teacher. We signed my daughter up for lessons right away and she continued learning under Gabriel until she graduated from high school. Under Gabriel’s wing, she honed her drawing and painting skills. He helped her with her portfolio and she was accepted into many top art schools around the United States. Gabriel is a kind and patient teacher, and his approach to teaching generates a warm and welcoming environment. He works with each student, brings out their talents, and by example, instills in them the passion to be a lifelong learner. In addition to this, he gives his students opportunities to participate in art competitions, exhibits, and to work with professional artists from around the world. These additional opportunities show his commitment and dedication to his students and his studio. I continue to recommend Gabriel to anyone I know that is interested in art. Because of his professionalism, his passion, and his dedication to the arts, students and our art community will continue to thrive and be strong. Sincerely,
